Oceanographer

She stood there in the doorway as though she were waiting for a miracle to happen. Watching closely at the space as a whole through the screen. It was as though she could see every molecule that made up the air and earth. Maybe she could. Maybe she wasn’t waiting but calling. Perhaps she needed something so badly she would be willing to split the very ground below her feet and let the ocean fill the space around her to bring her what she desired. Perhaps the ocean was her desire and instead of feeling the constant pull to those waves and wanting so badly to give into it’s call, she would call it to her with her very own siren song.

Closing her eyes, the earth went still and silent just for a moment until her warm breath was exhaled into the cool evening air and the stillness was destroyed by a violent shaking. As the windows rattled and the trees clung to the soil beneath them a voice called from inside the house. Her eyes opened wide and the rumbling ceased while she disappeared into the shadow of the door. All was quiet again until a cool breeze swept through in what almost seemed to be a sigh of relief.


Perhaps she was waiting for a miracle. Perhaps it was her own…
